Perry County

Located in the hilly terrain of southeastern Ohio, Perry County is home to 35,474 residents spread across 15,021 housing units. The county leans heavily toward homeownership, with 76.5 percent of occupied units owner-occupied, and median gross rent sits at $727 per month for those who rent. The median household income is $64,737. Residents here rely almost entirely on commuting to reach work, as only 1.2 percent of workers work from home, and the average one-way commute runs 30.8 minutes, reflecting the rural character of the area and the need to travel to employment centers in neighboring counties. The county seat is New Lexington, and the broader county economy has historically been tied to coal mining, though that industry has contracted significantly over the decades. The relatively high owner-occupancy rate points to a population with deep roots in the area and a housing stock composed largely of single-family homes rather than rental apartments or large multifamily developments.
